What to be able to hand over
Use experience you already have to choose a relevant spreadsheet problem. Then show a new employer how you define the question, check the source and explain the result.
- A work sample from a familiar problem
- Choose a task such as stock exceptions, staffing costs or a campaign report and use invented records.
- A clear before-and-after explanation
- Describe what you cleaned, which rule you applied and how you checked that the output was right.
- A targeted skills gap list
- Compare the work sample with a real role description, including domain knowledge and tools beyond Excel.
Build beyond this course
Choose a specific target role before building a longer learning plan. Its qualifications, industry knowledge and experience requirements determine what comes after spreadsheet practice.
These are suggested learning activities. Match them to the requirements of a specific role.
Work to practise
- Clean a copied order code while preserving meaningful zeros.
- Calculate row totals from quantity and price.
- Summarize one category and explain your checks.
All examples use original synthetic data. Source row numbers and column letters are shown so you can reproduce the formulas.
Turn a community-event log into a work sample
Clean the first code, calculate all order totals and add the Workshop category.
Text identifiers and USD. All records are invented for learning.
| Row | A · Code | B · Category | C · Quantity | D · Price USD |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | " 0042 " | Workshop | 3 | 18 |
| 3 | 0043 | Materials | 5 | 4 |
| 4 | 0044 | Workshop | 2 | 18 |
Worked solution and complete results
Clean first code · E2
=TRIM(A2)Result: 0042
First order USD · F2
=C2*D2Result: 54
Second order USD · F3
=C3*D3Result: 20
Third order USD · F4
=C4*D4Result: 36
Workshop USD · F6
=SUMIF(B2:B4,"Workshop",F2:F4)Result: 90
A mistake to catch
VALUE turns the identifier 0042 into 42. That is useful for quantities, but can break a code that relies on leading zeros.
Correction. Use TRIM to preserve this identifier as text. Convert only fields whose meaning is numeric, then check each category total against its rows.
Read the result
A truthful portfolio sentence is: “I cleaned a fictional order code, calculated three order values with cell references, and checked a USD 90 Workshop subtotal.” Keep the source alongside the sample.
Practise the skills in order
- Cell references Read the guide, then open the actual lesson.
- Arithmetic Read the guide, then open the actual lesson.
- Text functions Read the guide, then open the actual lesson.
- SUMIF Read the guide, then open the actual lesson.
- XLOOKUP Read the guide, then open the actual lesson.
- Filter Read the guide, then open the actual lesson.
Use the diagnostic to choose a starting point when the coordinated feature is available. A work sample and a course completion credential have bounded scope; neither guarantees employment.
Start with cell referencesPay and remote work
Choose a specific job before comparing pay
Career change is a starting point, not a wage category. Use the occupation and location of your target role; a previous salary or course completion does not establish a new offer.
Read a remote posting carefully
Compare remote roles by actual duties and seniority, then check hiring country and working hours. A familiar title can cover very different levels of responsibility.
Check the allowed country or state, working hours, employment or contractor status, and the currency and components of the offer. A remote role can still have location restrictions and locally set pay.
One employer example: GitLab’s candidate handbook says to check each listing’s hiring country. Its current compensation policy uses local market data and local-currency ranges. This is an illustration of employer policy, not a claim about every remote job.

Interview spreadsheet practice
Practise a mixed original work sample covering references, conditional totals, exact lookup and a short report.

USD for invented service orders. This is an original practice sample, not any employer's actual test or a qualification.
Bank version 2026-11-02. Includes Instructions, Practice, AnswerKey; 11 live answer formulas. All source records are invented for education.
The download is an additional practice task. Its Instructions sheet identifies the source coordinates; this page’s illustrative example may use different records.
- Working answers use scalar Excel 2007+ functions. No macros, external links or dynamic-array dependency. Native Excel has not been launched for verification.
