Excel practice for sales: explain targets and commission

Two percentages can describe the same sales total and mean different things. Name the comparison before you calculate a target report or commission.

What to be able to hand over

Sales reporting depends on a consistent definition of the pipeline. Keep booked revenue separate from possible deals and make the assumptions behind weighted estimates explicit.

A clean pipeline report
Use stable deal IDs, agreed stages and clear ownership; check duplicated rows before totaling.
A target-versus-actual review
Compare the same reporting period and currency, then inspect the accounts that drive the gap.
A scenario with stated assumptions
Label weighted pipeline as an estimate and test how a changed win probability affects the result.

Build beyond this course

Product knowledge, customer communication, negotiation and CRM discipline matter alongside spreadsheet reporting. Compensation plans and deal-credit rules need their own careful review.

Occupational context: BLS: Wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives, except technical and scientific products. The handover examples above are our practice suggestions.

Work to practise

  • Compare this period with its target and the prior period.
  • Apply each commission rate only to its own band.
  • Keep a summary tied to the underlying sales records.

All examples use original synthetic data. Source row numbers and column letters are shown so you can reproduce the formulas.

Explain a target report and marginal payout

A fictional rep sold USD 15,000 against a USD 12,000 target and USD 10,000 prior-period sales. Commission is 2% on the first USD 10,000 and 5% above it.

USD; target achievement and growth are ratios, displayed as percentages.

Worked solution and complete results

Target achievement · D4

=B2/B3

Result: 1.25

Growth versus prior · D5

=(B2-B4)/B4

Result: 0.5

Marginal commission USD · D6

=MIN(B2,B5)*B6+MAX(0,B2-B5)*E2

Result: 450

A mistake to catch

Applying the top 5% rate to all USD 15,000 gives USD 750 and overstates the specified marginal payout by USD 300.

Correction. Calculate the first USD 10,000 at 2% and only the excess at 5%. Label 125% as target achievement and 50% as growth.

Read the result

The payout under this invented schedule is USD 450. It says nothing about an actual employer contract, returns, taxes or payment eligibility.

Pay and remote work

This is one goods-sales occupation, not a benchmark for all sales or SaaS roles. BLS describes salary-plus-commission/bonus arrangements; this wage is not a guaranteed base salary or advertised on-target earnings.

These BLS figures cover employees across work arrangements. They are not a remote-only salary, an entry-level offer or an earnings outcome from this course. Median means half earn more and half earn less.

Read a remote posting carefully

For an inside-sales or remote account role, check territory, customer hours and travel expectations. Compare base salary, variable commission and on-target earnings separately.

Check the allowed country or state, working hours, employment or contractor status, and the currency and components of the offer. A remote role can still have location restrictions and locally set pay.

One employer example: GitLab’s candidate handbook says to check each listing’s hiring country. Its current compensation policy uses local market data and local-currency ranges. This is an illustration of employer policy, not a claim about every remote job.
