What to be able to hand over
People reporting needs careful definitions and controlled access. Count the intended population, keep hiring intervals separate from headcount and share only the information needed.
- A defined headcount report
- Specify active status, observation date and treatment of contractors or leavers before calculating.
- A hiring-stage summary
- Separate completed hiring intervals from open candidates, and inspect the distribution as well as the average.
- A privacy-conscious handover
- Use invented records in a portfolio and document the report without sharing applicant or employee details.
Build beyond this course
Recruitment, HR systems, employment practices and confidential-data handling require knowledge beyond formulas. Actual payroll and legal decisions need the employer’s policies and appropriate expertise.
Occupational context: BLS: Human resources specialists. The handover examples above are our practice suggestions.
Work to practise
- Count active headcount within a team.
- Calculate calendar time between fixed hiring dates.
- Compare the mean and median of completed intervals.
All examples use original synthetic data. Source row numbers and column letters are shown so you can reproduce the formulas.
Read a small fictional hiring report
Count active Service staff. Compare the mean and median hiring interval for all four completed hires.
Fictional IDs and calendar days; no actual employee or applicant information.
| Row | A · Employee ID | B · Team | C · Status | D · Hiring days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | HR-81 | Service | Active | 8 |
| 3 | HR-82 | Service | Left | 10 |
| 4 | HR-83 | Packing | Active | 12 |
| 5 | HR-84 | Service | Active | 30 |
Worked solution and complete results
Active Service headcount · E2
=COUNTIFS(B2:B5,"Service",C2:C5,"Active")Result: 2
Mean hiring days · E3
=AVERAGE(D2:D5)Result: 15
Median hiring days · E4
=MEDIAN(D2:D5)Result: 11
Example interval 2 to 10 November · E5
=DAYS(DATE(2026,11,10),DATE(2026,11,2))Result: 8
A mistake to catch
Counting all Service rows gives three and includes someone who left. Presenting only the mean conceals the influence of the 30-day hire.
Correction. Combine team and Active status for headcount. Label the four completed hiring intervals as a separate population and show both mean and median.
Read the result
Two active Service records remain. The median completed interval is 11 calendar days and the mean 15. Neither number describes candidates who have not yet finished hiring.

This specialist benchmark does not represent HR assistants, payroll clerks, compensation specialists or HR managers.
These BLS figures cover employees across work arrangements. They are not a remote-only salary, an entry-level offer or an earnings outcome from this course. Median means half earn more and half earn less.

Read a remote posting carefully
Remote HR work still involves sensitive records and jurisdiction-specific practices. Check the supported employee locations, interview schedule and approved systems for handling people data.
Check the allowed country or state, working hours, employment or contractor status, and the currency and components of the offer. A remote role can still have location restrictions and locally set pay.
One employer example: GitLab’s candidate handbook says to check each listing’s hiring country. Its current compensation policy uses local market data and local-currency ranges. This is an illustration of employer policy, not a claim about every remote job.
