What to be able to hand over
Operational reporting is useful when it leads to a specific next action. Identify the stock, order or service exception, then make the missing information visible before someone acts.
- An actionable exception queue
- Distinguish a low stock level from a missing threshold, then assign each exception an owner and status.
- A replenishment calculation
- State the units, supplier pack size and rounding rule. Keep the underlying demand assumptions visible.
- A daily operating report
- Reconcile totals, date the extract and explain changes that need a decision rather than a decorative chart.
Build beyond this course
Supply-chain systems, demand planning, lead times and process improvement add context that these small exercises do not model. Operations covers many job families, from site coordination to logistics analysis.
Occupational context: BLS: Logisticians. The handover examples above are our practice suggestions.
Work to practise
- Flag items below their approved stock threshold.
- Round the shortfall to a whole number of supplier packs.
- Keep incomplete settings on an exception list.
All examples use original synthetic data. Source row numbers and column letters are shown so you can reproduce the formulas.
Prepare a reorder list
For a numeric threshold, buy only enough full packs to reach it. Leave an absent threshold for review.
Units and whole packs; thresholds are supplied assumptions, not optimized safety stock.
| Row | A · Item | B · On hand units | C · Threshold units | D · Pack units |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | Cable | 17 | 30 | 8 |
| 3 | Label | 40 | 40 | 10 |
| 4 | Tray | 9 | 20 | 6 |
| 5 | Sleeve | 4 | 5 |
Worked solution and complete results
Cable packs · E2
=IF(C2="","Review threshold",CEILING(MAX(0,C2-B2)/D2,1))Result: 2
Label packs · E3
=IF(C3="","Review threshold",CEILING(MAX(0,C3-B3)/D3,1))Result: 0
Tray packs · E4
=IF(C4="","Review threshold",CEILING(MAX(0,C4-B4)/D4,1))Result: 2
Sleeve packs · E5
=IF(C5="","Review threshold",CEILING(MAX(0,C5-B5)/D5,1))Result: Review threshold
A mistake to catch
Rounding 13/8 down orders one Cable pack and leaves stock at 25, below the threshold of 30.
Correction. Round required packs upward after capping the shortfall at zero. Test for a missing threshold before arithmetic.
Read the result
Two Cable packs add 16 units for a new balance of 33. Two Tray packs add 12 for 21. Label needs no order; Sleeve requires an approved threshold.

A related supply-chain occupation, not a general operations salary. Operations managers, warehouse staff and coordinators have different job scopes.
These BLS figures cover employees across work arrangements. They are not a remote-only salary, an entry-level offer or an earnings outcome from this course. Median means half earn more and half earn less.

Read a remote posting carefully
For a remote operations posting, distinguish reporting and planning work from physical inventory or site supervision. Ask how field information is verified and which location or shift you support.
Check the allowed country or state, working hours, employment or contractor status, and the currency and components of the offer. A remote role can still have location restrictions and locally set pay.
One employer example: GitLab’s candidate handbook says to check each listing’s hiring country. Its current compensation policy uses local market data and local-currency ranges. This is an illustration of employer policy, not a claim about every remote job.
